Send Help - Movie Review
Send Help is a survival horror film directed by Sam Raimi and stars Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. The film tells the story of two work colleagues who are stranded on a deserted island, being the only survivors in a plane crash, they must overcome their differences in order to survive. This is Sam Raimi's first horror film since 2009's Drag Me to Hell, unless you count Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to its horror elements. How is the movie you may ask? It's fantastic! The movie is best described as Misery combined with Cast Away.
This is the most Sam Raimi movie to come from Sam Raimi in quite some time! This movie is hilarious, tightly paced, violent, and extremely fun. Rachel McAdams is terrific in her role, doing a great job of playing a character who is highly intelligent but socially awkward, and equally great during scenes of high intensity. Dylan O'Brien steals the show here, playing a newly appointed CEO at a company who relishes the role of a massive douchebag. This character could have very easily gone into annoying territory, but because the writing here is so strong and Dylan O'Brien's performance is so good, it's extremely entertaining and fun to watch. He also provides a great amount of the film's comedy, which works wonderfully. What works really well here is the chemistry between the two, their roles here is essentially a dick measuring power struggle for control.
If you're looking for some classic over-the-top Sam Raimi violence you get it here in spades! The plane crash sequence is very intense, and when the deserted island stuff starts you get our two leads hurting each other in many ways, it's bloody, brutal and sometimes even funny! You also get a standout scene involving a wild boar attack and the gore in this scene is plentiful and very well done! It never gets quite as over-the-top as something like Evil Dead but it does so enough to make it a great Sam Raimi experience. In typical Sam Raimi fashion, this film moves at a lightning speed pace, there are no dull moments here.
In the end, Send Help is a highly entertaining thriller with laughs, awesome violence and two incredible performances. If you're looking for a full Sam Raimi experience this is it! It's bloody, funny, fast-paced, exciting, and great fun.
